When to go to the psychiatrist ?
For someone to go to the doctor when something disturbs his mental health, making it difficult for him to deal with the pressures of life, work efficiently, and integrate with his society in a normal way.
Usually, the problem that calls for going to a psychiatrist is conditional on “functional dysfunction,” an expression used in the psychological literature to describe an individual’s relationship with himself and society, and the way in which he interacts in the fields of work or study.
This dysfunction manifests itself in several forms, including
1. Loss of desire and enthusiasm to do things
: not regular, cyclical boredom. This means losing your enjoyment of things that once made you happy, even if the reason isn't clear to you. The lack of desire and enthusiasm becomes a real sign that needs to be considered, especially if you want to do it without the ability to do it.
2. Frequent and noticeable lack of focus:
a matter that varies from person to person, of course. The levels of human concentration are different, and differ for one person at different stages of his life. Therefore, only the person who suffers from this problem can determine whether this is, for example, a normal life-long occurrence, a symptom associated with passing stresses, or a sudden abnormal symptom that requires psychological counseling.
3. What you do to cope is no longer working:
We all have ways of dealing with anxiety and stress, such as going out with our friends, reading a book, watching a movie, hanging out with parents, creating artwork, or even taking a vacation from work and travel. But when it seems that all of these things are no longer working to overcome bad feelings and thoughts, it is time to seek help from a professional.
4. The emergence of addictive symptoms:
This is a matter of function and ability to be productive. When it becomes difficult for you to break a habit, in a way that affects your social and work life, it makes sense to go to a psychiatrist and seek advice. These symptoms include everything you cannot quit: addictive drug use, binge eating, persistent weight loss, excessive alcohol consumption, or even the inability to stop playing video games.
5. Cases of loss:
the inability to deal with cases of loss and the persistence of negative symptoms for a period longer than normal periods of mourning requires a visit to a psychiatrist. Not all people deal with this issue in similar ways. Sometimes some of them just can't handle it at all.
6. Depression
: It is not a constant thing, nor is it the same for all people, and its symptoms are often different from one person to another, simply because we are different. But this does not mean that it is a real thing, and a real problem that many people suffer from, sometimes in complete silence.
The problem with depression is that the word itself no longer says the same thing. Depression in clinic and hospital, which is diagnosed by a doctor, other than depression that someone says they feel when they mean sadness, for example, or not wanting to go out with their friends. But there are at least a set of signs that can be considered an indication of the need to go to the doctor, in his clinic or in a hospital:
Examples of these signs
Not being able to feel happiness from things that used to make him happy
Feeling of lack of motivation, unwillingness to act
Feeling of little value, that he has no special significance, even in his close circle
Changing sleep habits, whether by increasing them significantly, or significantly decreasing the number of hours of sleep
Obvious lack of neuromotor coordination: Some people report feeling a sudden imbalance, inability to focus on what they are doing, and sometimes an important symptom is bumping into furniture in the home one used to live in.
Physical Symptoms:
Depression may manifest itself in the form of sudden physical symptoms. For example, there are constant headaches or fatigue, and there is a frequent observation by a number of patients of a persistent flu that the patient does not recover from unless he enters another. This is an important indicator, but the most important thing here is the need to exclude the organic causes of these symptoms
According to the World Health Organization, depression is the number one source of disability in the world, and the most common mental illness, with an average of 300 million people. These are not just numbers, it is us, and this is our reality that we must be well aware of.
7. Suicidal thoughts:
There is no space here for any hesitation of any kind. Any idea you have of self-harm should be taken seriously, especially if it recurs. There is no turning back when these ideas turn into plans that include implementation, even if you ignore them. Having these thoughts is a real sign of the need to go ASAP.
8. Phobia
: a persistent morbid fear of specific situations or activities that provoke a state of tension when approaching or thinking about them. Oftentimes, a phobia sufferer realizes that his fears are irrational, but he cannot deal with them.
9. Anxiety disorders
: Anxiety is part of the human experience. We feel anxious all the time at different times, but things become more intense and need to be intervened when the anxiety persists and becomes uncontrollable, and when it begins to interfere with a normal life.
Obsessive thoughts that the patient cannot control or deal with are close to this space. Some of them feel trapped in their thoughts, insisting on them, without the ability to respond to them or get rid of them. Checking the gas switch more than once, making sure that the door is closed, stress when practicing religious rites.
This is not the usual anxiety that we find in some of them. Many people vary in their feelings of anxiety and ways to deal with it, but it becomes a need for a doctor when things get out of control, and it becomes difficult for those who suffer from it to lead a normal life.
10. Mental disorders:
Mental disorders can appear in more than one way and more than one symptom. Sometimes these strange symptoms are the result of a larger problem that needs a mental health professional. We are talking here about diseases that occupy an important part of the world
